15 Jul London set to host Wikimania, featuring a stellar line up of speakers including Jimmy Wales and Tim Berners-Lee
London has been selected to host the 2014 Wikimania conference, the largest free culture festival in the world.
The capital fought off fierce competition from cities around the world to secure the position as the next host of the annual event for the international Wikipedia community.
Confirmed speakers for next year’s event so far include: Jimmy Wales, founder, Wikipedia; Clay Shirky, Professor, NYU; Tim Berners-Lee, inventor, World Wide Web; Lawrence Lessig, American academic and political activist; Cory Doctorow, co-editor blog, Boing Boing.
The event will be held in The Barbican centre, Europe’s largest performing arts centre, and will play host to 10,000 people over the week of the event.
Taking the baton from Hong Kong, project partners for Wikimania 2014 include: London & Partners, TCIO, London First, Mayors Office, ODI and EFF.
Wikimania 2014 will officially launch at Level 39 next week, where Jimmy Wales will describe the large-scale changes happening at Wikipedia.
